- Physical loss and disturbance are assessed through spatio-temporal analysis of human activity data (presence/absence, for selected activities frequency and intensity) in a geographic information system, combined with acoustic remote sensing (multibeam bathymetry and backscatter) and ground-truthing (grab samples and visual observations) to detect changes in the extent and distribution of broad-scale habitat types. Monitoring is coordinated by RBINS within the EU DG ENV technical group TG Seabed. Multibeam echosounder (bathymetry and backscatter); Van Veen grab/boxcorer ground-truth sampling. GIS-based spatial analysis of human-activity layers; acoustic backscatter seabed classification (mud/sand/coarse sediment) and change-detection analysis.
