Oiled Guillemots dataset supporting the 2024 Belgian MSFD assessment of D8C4

This dataset is part of the 2024 Belgian submission for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) linked to descriptor 8, criterion 4. This dataset reports the proportion of oiled Common Guillemots (Uria aalge) among stranded seabirds along the Belgian coast, as an indicator of acute oil pollution (environmental target: average proportion of oiled guillemots below 10% of the total found dead or dying on the beaches).

Généralités sur la provenance
Each month during winter (October-March), Belgian beaches are searched for stranded seabirds; species, age, decomposition rate and presence of oil are recorded, following OSPAR EcoQO standards. Monitoring is carried out by INBO under the OSPAR Coordinated Environmental Monitoring Programme, since 1962 (yearly counts), with monthly counts since 1992. In-situ beach surveys (land/beach), monthly during winter. Visual assessment of oiling status of stranded Guillemots; calculation of % oiled among stranded individuals per OSPAR EcoQO standards.
