- Phytoplankton images are processed with a FlowCAM system and semi-automatically classified with the VisualSpreadsheet software at genus/species level; zooplankton images are processed with a ZooScan system and classified with ZooProcess software into a validated set of taxonomic groups. In both cases, automated classification is manually validated by an experienced taxonomist at the VLIZ Marine Observation Center. Monitoring is carried out within the VLIZ LifeWatch marine biodiversity observatory in the Belgian part of the North Sea, organised by the VLIZ Data Centre; data contribute to EurOBIS and EMODnet Biology. As of 2020, continuation of this monitoring was dependent on continued funding from 2021 onward. Phytoplankton: 55µm mesh Apstein net (surface deployment); Zooplankton: 200µm mesh WP2 plankton net (57cm diameter), vertical haul from bottom to surface. Phytoplankton imaged on a FlowCAM VS-4 (4X magnification, FC300 flow cell, 1.7mL/min) and classified with VisualSpreadsheet software; zooplankton imaged with a ZooScan system and classified with ZooProcess software; both manually validated by an experienced taxonomist.
