Marine bird abundance dataset supporting the 2024 Belgian MSFD assessment of D1C2

This dataset is part of the 2024 Belgian submission for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) linked to descriptor 1, criterion 2. This dataset reports the population abundance (number of individuals, biomass) of benthic-feeding, pelagic-feeding, surface-feeding and wading birds in Belgian waters, combining yearly breeding-colony nest counts along the Belgian coast with ship-based at-sea seabird counts.

Statement
In the port of Zeebrugge, all nests containing one or more eggs are counted; data on other coastal breeding sites are (sometimes rough) estimates of the number of breeding pairs. At-sea abundance is assessed through ship-based counts following the standardized European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) protocol (Tasker et al., 1984). Monitoring is carried out by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO): breeding-colony counts since 1997, ship-based at-sea counts since 1992 (partly through dedicated research projects, e.g. the WinMon offshore-windfarm-effects programme, 2005-present); contributing to the OSPAR Coordinated Environmental Monitoring Programme and the EU Birds Directive. In-situ nest counts (land/beach survey); ship-based visual seabird counts (ESAS protocol), from ships of opportunity and dedicated research surveys. Aggregation of nest/breeding-pair counts and at-sea count data; contribution to the OSPAR EcoQO assessment.
