Non-indigenous species introduced by human activities dataset supporting the 2024 Belgian MSFD assessment of D2C1
This dataset is part of the 2024 Belgian submission for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) linked to descriptor 2, criterion 1. This dataset lists the newly-introduced species encountered in the Belgian part of the North Sea (BPNS) between 2016 and 2021, combining dedicated non-indigenous species (NIS) surveys of artificial hard substrates with incidental NIS records collected during the soft-sediment and epibenthos monitoring programmes.

- Statement
- Samples are identified to species level in the laboratory following standardised procedures for sampling hard subtidal habitats (NBN EN ISO 5667-1, ISO 16665:2005, ISO 19493:2007, JNCC Marine Monitoring handbook); new/non-indigenous species are cross-checked against reference species lists. Monitoring is coordinated by RBINS under national legislation and the OSPAR Coordinated Environmental Monitoring Programme, with incidental records contributed by the ILVO soft-sediment and epibenthos monitoring (dredge disposal/sand extraction impact assessment) programmes. Scrape samples on artificial hard substrates (groynes, buoys, wind turbines, measuring piles, other offshore structures), approx. 50 samples/year; incidental NIS detected in Van Veen grab (0.1m²) benthos samples. Laboratory species identification against standard taxonomic references.
