- Statement
- In the port of Zeebrugge, all nests containing one or more eggs are counted; data on other coastal breeding sites are (sometimes rough) estimates of the number of breeding pairs. At-sea abundance is assessed through ship-based counts following the standardized European Seabirds at Sea (ESAS) protocol (Tasker et al., 1984). Monitoring is carried out by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO): breeding-colony counts since 1997, ship-based at-sea counts since 1992 (partly through dedicated research projects, e.g. the WinMon offshore-windfarm-effects programme, 2005-present); contributing to the OSPAR Coordinated Environmental Monitoring Programme and the EU Birds Directive. In-situ nest counts (land/beach survey); ship-based visual seabird counts (ESAS protocol), from ships of opportunity and dedicated research surveys. Aggregation of nest/breeding-pair counts and at-sea count data; contribution to the OSPAR EcoQO assessment.
