Afin de permettre les comparaisons internationales, en particulier au sein de l’Union européenne, Eurostat a mis en place l’Enquête force de travail. Par la combinaison d’un ensemble de questions, elle permet de mesurer les agrégats tels que la population active, l’emploi et le chômage de la même façon dans tous les pays et de manière conforme aux recommandations du BIT (Bureau International du Travail). Cette enquête a lieu de manière continue en Belgique depuis 1999 (avant, seulement au printemps). Elle ne fournit cependant des données fiables qu’au niveau des régions (Wallonie, Flandre, Bruxelles). C’est pourquoi, afin de pouvoir comparer les arrondissements et les communes belges à d’autres zones au niveau international, l’IWEPS calcule des données calibrées sur l’Enquête sur les forces de travail. Les totaux, par sexe, âge et région, correspondent exactement à ceux publiés par Statbel, l’Institut national de statistique belge. Ces données peuvent différer légèrement des données publiées par Eurostat qui revoie l’ensemble de la série chaque année. Om internationale vergelijkingen mogelijk te maken, met name binnen de Europese Unie, heeft Eurostat de Enquete naar arbeidskrachten opgezet. Door een reeks vragen te combineren is het mogelijk aggregaten zoals de beroepsbevolking, de werkgelegenheid en de werkloosheid in alle landen op dezelfde wijze en in overeenstemming met de aanbevelingen van het IAB (Internationaal Arbeidsbureau) te meten. Dit onderzoek wordt in België sinds 1999 ononderbroken uitgevoerd (vroeger alleen in het voorjaar). Het verschaft echter alleen betrouwbare gegevens op het niveau van de gewesten (Wallonië, Vlaanderen, Brussel). Om de Belgische arrondissementen en gemeenten te kunnen vergelijken met andere gebieden op internationaal niveau, extrapoleert het IWEPS daarom gegevens aan de hand van de Enquete naar arbeidskrachten. De totalen, uitgesplitst naar geslacht, leeftijd en gewest, komen precies overeen met die gepubliceerd door Statbel, het Belgisch Nationaal Instituut voor de Statistiek. Deze gegevens kunnen enigszins afwijken van de gegevens die worden gepubliceerd door Eurostat, dat de hele reeks elk jaar herziet. Eurostat hat die Arbeitskräfteerhebung eingesetzt, um internationale Vergleiche, insbesondere innerhalb von der Europäischen Union, zu ermöglichen. Durch die Kombination von zahlreichen Fragen berechnet sie Aggregate wie die erwerbstätige Bevölkerung, die Erwerbstätigkeit und die Arbeitslosigkeit auf gleicher Art in aller Länder und gemäß der Empfehlungen des IAA (Internationales Arbeitsamt). Diese Erhebung findet seit 1999 (und früher nur im Frühling) ständig in Belgien statt. Sie liefert trotzdem nur auf regionaler Ebene (Wallonien, Flandern, Brüssel) zuverlässige Daten. Deswegen berechnet das IWEPS aus der Arbeitskräfteerhebung stammenden Daten, um belgische Bezirke und Gemeinden mit anderen Zonen auf internationaler Ebene zu vergleichen. Die Gesamtzahlen pro Geschlecht, Alter und Region stimmen genau mit den Zahlen von Statbel, dem belgischen Statistikamt, überein. Diese Daten könnten leicht anders sein als die Daten von Eurostat, da Eurostat die ganze Reihe jedes Jahr überarbeitet.
