Trois versions sont disponibles pour le territoire belge: 1) une couche TOPO, reprenant une représentation cartographique à toutes les échelles. 2) une couche TOPO-GREY, qui est la version « grisée » de la couche TOPO, elle convient parfaitement comme fond de carte. 3) une couche OVERLAY (1:2 500-1:25 000), destinée à être appliquée en surcharge à d’autres données en fond (des orthophotos par exemple). Cette couche ne reprend la symbolisation que de quelques thèmes uniquement. Deux autres couches, CROSSBORDER et CROSSBORDER-GREY (version « grisée » de CROSSBORDER) sont disponibles pour permettre la visualisation (aux petites échelles uniquement, 1 :100 000 – 1 :4 000 000) du contexte européen dans lequel s’inscrit la Belgique. Zij vormt een perfecte kaartachtergrond. 3) een OVERLAY-laag (1:2 500 - 1:25 000), die bedoeld is om als overdruk op andere achtergrondgegevens gelegd te worden. Aux plus petites échelles, les cartes très généralisées permettent de ne mettre en évidence qu’un thème ou l’autre tel que les entités administratives ou les réseaux principaux, tandis que les échelles intermédiaires offrent des cartes topographiques caractéristiques de l’Institut géographique national. Ces cartes topographiques sont caractérisées par une représentation du relief, sous forme d’ombrage ou de courbes de niveaux, par une généralisation limitée et par une représentation d’un maximum d’objets caractérisant la réalité du terrain. Ces cartes sont donc des outils permettant d’interpréter le terrain, de se localiser, et de s’orienter. Les plus grandes échelles, extrêmement détaillées, s’apparentent plus à des plans, ayant leur utilité spécifique mais ne permettant pas d’avoir un bon aperçu global du paysage. La finalité première de CartoWeb.be est de proposer à l’utilisateur, une représentation cartographique complète, élaborée et spécifiquement adaptée à une visualisation à l’écran des données standards de l’IGN, dans leur version la plus actuelle (la plus mise à jour). Le résultat est une réelle cartographie, et pas uniquement une symbolisation basique aidant à l’interprétation. Le service de visualisation CartoWeb.be peut être inséré dans une application internet ou un logiciel appartenant à l’utilisateur, si ceux-ci supportent le protocole WMS/WMTS. Dankzij deze verschillende schalen kunnen verschillende types informatie weergegeven worden. Op de kleinste schalen maken de zeer gegeneraliseerde kaarten het mogelijk slechts één thema te benadrukken, zoals de administratieve eenheden of de belangrijkste netwerken. Op de middenschalige weergaven vindt men de typische topografische kaarten van het Nationaal Geografisch Instituut. Kenmerkend voor deze kaarten is de weergave van het reliëf in de vorm van schaduwen of hoogtelijnen, een beperkte generalisatie en een weergave van een maximaal aantal objecten die de realiteit op het terrein kenmerken. Deze kaarten zijn dus middelen waarmee men het terrein kan interpreteren, zijn positie kan bepalen en zich oriënteren. De grootste schalen, die zeer gedetailleerd zijn, lijken meer op plannen. Ze hebben hun eigen specifiek nut maar geven geen goed globaal beeld van het landschap. Het eerste doel van CartoWeb.be is de gebruiker een volledige kaartweergave aan te bieden, ontworpen en specifiek aangepast aan een weergave op het scherm, van de standaardgegevens van het NGI in hun meest actuele versie (het meest geüpdatet). Het resultaat is een echte kaartweergave en niet alleen maar een basissymbolisatie die helpt bij de interpretatie. De CartoWeb.be viewservice kan worden opgenomen in een internettoepassing of in een programma van de gebruiker, als die het WMTS/WMS-protocol ondersteunen. In CartoWeb.be können auf 11 verschiedenen Maβstäbe entwickelte kartographische Darstellungen angesehen werden. Dank dieser Vielfalt von Maβstäben könnten also verschiedene Informationstype dargestellt werden. In kleineren Maβstäben ist es möglich, mit stark generalisierten Karten ein besonderes Thema wie die Verwaltungseinheiten oder die Hauptnetzwerke herauszustellen, während Zwischenmaβstäbe die typischen topographischen Karten des Nationalen Geographischen Instituts anzeigen. Diese topographischen Karten kennzeichnen sich durch eine Reliefdarstellung dank Schattierungen oder Höhenlinien, durch eine beschränkte Generalisierung und durch die Darstellung möglichst vieler Objekte, die die Realität vor Ort beschreiben. Diese Karten sind also Hilfsmittel, womit das Gelände interpretiert werden kann, man sich lokalisieren und orientieren kann. Die äuβerst detaillierte groβe Maβstäbe ähneln mehr Plänen, da sie einen spezifischen Nutz haben aber keine gute globale Übersicht der Landschaft geben. Das Hauptziel von CartoWeb.be ist, dem Benutzer eine vollständige und elaborierte kartographische Darstellung der Standard-Daten des NGI in derer letzten (meist aktualisierten) Version anzubieten, wobei die Anzeige der Daten spezifisch für das Ansehen auf Bildschirm angepasst ist. Das Resultat ist eine wirkliche kartographische Darstellung und nicht nur eine Elementarsymbolisierung zur Vereinfachung der Interpretation. Der CartoWeb.be View Service kann in eine Internet-Anwendung oder in eine Software des Benutzers integriert werden, wenn diese das WMTS/WMS-Protokoll unterstützen.
