In België liggen de wettelijk bepaalde administratieve grenzen vast en kunnen zij alleen worden gewijzigd door een wet, een verordening of een decreet. De Algemene Administratie van de Patrimoniumdocumentatie van de FOD Financiën is door de federale overheid aangeduid als de authentieke bron van de Belgische administratieve grenzen. Deze dataset komt overeen met meest recente (actuele) toestand op het ogenblik van de raadpleging. Het bestaat uit vijf geometrische klassen. De eerste klasse komt overeen met het gehele nationale grondgebied. Het tweede komt overeen met het grondgebied van de drie gewesten, het derde met het grondgebied van de provincies, het vierde met het grondgebied van de administratieve arrondissementen, het vijfde met het grondgebied van de gemeenten. In Belgien sind die rechtlich definierten administrativen Grenzen festgelegt und können nur durch ein Gesetz, einen Beschluss oder ein Dekret geändert werden. Die Generalverwaltung Vermögensdokumentation des FÖD Finanzen wird von den anderen Föderalbehörden als authentische Quelle der belgischen administrativen Grenzen bestimmt. Dieses Datenpaket entspricht der aktuellen (gegenwärtigen) Lage zum Zeitpunkt der Einsichtnahme. Es besteht aus fünf geometrischen Klassen. Die erste Klasse entspricht dem gesamten nationalen Hoheitsgebiet. Die zweite entspricht dem Gebiet der drei Regionen, die dritte dem Gebiet der Provinzen, die vierte dem Gebiet der Verwaltungsbezirke und die fünfte dem Gebiet der Gemeinden. Parfois, les coordonnées sont légalement constatées, mais souvent elles proviennent d’une analyse et d’une interprétation de documents légaux, et/ou de données terrain ou de toutes autres informations relevantes comme les référentiels régionaux, les photographies aériennes ou les plans primitifs. Soms zijn de coördinaten wettelijk vastgelegd, maar vaak worden zij afgeleid uit een analyse en interpretatie van wettelijke documenten, en/of gegevens van op het terrein of andere relevante informatie zoals regionale referentiebestanden, luchtfoto's of primitieve plannen. Deze tracés hebben dus niet overal dezelfde kwaliteit. Vooral op plaatsen waar geen recente metingen werden verricht, kunnen (carto)grafische coördinaten worden voorgesteld, die dus in de loop van de tijd kunnen veranderen als nieuwe informatie van betere kwaliteit wordt verstrekt overeenkomstig de bijwerkingsregels die momenteel worden ontwikkeld. In de CadGIS-database zijn de administratieve grenzen de afbakeningen van Belgische administratieve entiteiten op verschillende hiërarchische niveaus, d.w.z. gemeenten, administratieve arrondissementen, provincies, regio's en tenslotte het land. De polygonen (die overeenkomen met het grondgebied van de verschillende hiërarchische niveaus van de gemeente tot het land) worden gegenereerd op basis van het tracé van deze grenzen. Manchmal sind die Koordinaten gesetzlich festgehalten, aber oft werden sie aus einer Analyse und Interpretation von gesetzlichen Unterlagen und/oder vor Ort erfassten Daten oder anderen sachdienlichen Informationen wie regionalen Referenzdateien, Luftaufnahmen oder primitiven Plänen abgeleitet. Diese Umrisse haben nicht überall die gleiche Qualität. Vor allem an Orten, die längere Zeit nicht vermessen wurden, können (karto)grafische Koordinaten vorgeschlagen werden und sich daher im Laufe der Zeit ändern, wenn neue und bessere Informationen gemäß den derzeit ausgearbeiteten Aktualisierungsregeln geliefert werden. In der CadGIS-Datenbank sind die administrativen Grenzen die Abgrenzungen der belgischen Verwaltungseinheiten auf verschiedenen Hierarchieebenen, d. h. Gemeinden, Verwaltungsbezirke, Provinzen, Regionen und schließlich das Staatsgebiet. Die Polygone (entsprechend den Gebieten der verschiedenen Hierarchieebenen von der Gemeinde bis zum gesamten Staatsgebiet) werden auf der Grundlage des Verlaufs dieser Grenzen generiert.
